Following a visit last Friday (January 17), MP Bob Seely has hailed the Cowes Men’s Shed as a first-rate example of a project which helps to combat loneliness and social exclusion.
The Cowes Men’s Shed – which has been operating since May 2018 - is a place to go for people who may be lonely and need company, those who like working shoulder to shoulder with other men on projects or hobbies, or individuals who cannot carry out their hobbies at home because of space or noise issues.
Bob said: “People can become socially isolated for a range of reasons but getting older is certainly one of the main causes and can be a problem on a largely rural Island with an ageing population.
“This is a first-rate example of a community project that brings people in the community together, giving them a sense of purpose and belonging.
“It’s clear from talking to the people there that they have a lot of fun meeting up and sharing skills. The shed has a real buzz about it, and I look forward to visiting again soon.”
The Cowes Men’s Shed - which has around 80 members - is open Monday - Friday from 10 am – 3 pm and membership is free.
The project is currently supported by the National Lottery Community Fund until Spring 2021 and receives support from the Storeroom which has already improved the premises with new doors, windows and heating.
