I understand the strength of feeling on this issue. The current high standards of pesticides in the UK safeguards people and the environment from any potential harm, and consumers want to know that these standards will remain.
My opinions on HS2 are well known: I was unconvinced that HS2 represented the best way of relieving existing pressure on the rail network and generating new capacity. I was also unconvinced about the journey-time, environmental and economic benefits of HS2.
There is no place in this country for animal cruelty, but unfortunately animals are still sometimes mistreated. I am therefore pleased that the Government has put together a package of measures which will protect animals in our homes, in agriculture, and in the wild.
Food and farming is a bedrock of our economy and environment, generating £112 billion a year and helping shape some of our finest habitats and landscapes.
I am incredibly proud of the NHS and the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. As the Island’s MP I have been in regular contact with the Trust to discuss pandemic-related issues. I have seen how both the Trust and NHS workers have made an extraordinary contribution during this time.
I know that the Government is following scientific guidance to ensure that steps are taken to ensure that people are able to go about their business as safely as possible.
These have been very difficult times for the country and while it is paramount to protect jobs and the economy, I appreciate that questions are also being asked about the way the country does business in the future.
This week I have received many emails calling for new legislation and a greater commitment from Government to preserve our food standards. I fully recognise the value of the UK’s food standards. On the Island, our award-winning local producers represent some of the best Britain has to offer.
The UK will continue to ensure that the NHS is protected in all trade agreements it is party to, whether transitioned from an EU context or as a result of new negotiations.
